Where cases go

Every defendant in the selection, from top charge, to whether the case reached circuit court, to the final result. Percentages are shares of resolved cases; pending and other unresolved cases are shown as counts. Hover a band for its count.

Every disposition

Final result for the selection. Shares divide by resolved cases; pending and unknown cases are listed but not in the denominator.

How this is counted

  • One row per defendant. A person's charges in district (General District) and circuit court are joined into one case when they share a case number, offense date or arrest date; when a district charge is followed by a circuit indictment within a year of the last district hearing; or when a dropped case is re-filed within a year. People are matched by the court system's person ID and by court, name and birth month-day.
  • Top charge is the most serious charge filed in either court: murder (18.2-31, -32, -32.1, -32.2, -33, -40), manslaughter (18.2-35, -36), attempted murder (including conspiracy and solicitation), felony sex offenses, aggravated malicious wounding, carjacking, robbery, abduction, malicious wounding. DUI killings and vehicle manslaughter are left out. Someone charged with manslaughter is counted under manslaughter, never under murder.
  • Outcome, in this order: NGRI; conviction on the top charge (as charged, including a lesser degree such as 1st- to 2nd-degree murder); conviction reduced to a related offense (murder to manslaughter, attempted murder or aggravated malicious wounding to malicious wounding, carjacking to robbery); conviction of a lesser offense; still pending; dropped, dismissed or acquitted. A drop in district court counts only when no circuit case followed.
  • Resolved means convicted, withheld finding, NGRI, or dropped/dismissed/acquitted. Every share on this page divides by resolved cases.
  • Disposition year is the year the deciding result was entered. Pending, fugitive and juvenile/unknown cases have none.
  • Fairfax comparison. Fairfax circuit court does not report to the statewide system, so Fairfax murder and manslaughter defendants come from the Fairfax homicide database (FCPD arrests 2019 on, checked against the Fairfax dockets). Both sides: arrested 2019–2025, decided 2020 or later or still pending.
  • Dates of the data. Statewide court data as of May 13, 2026. Fairfax outcomes are counted as recorded through October 22, 2026, including Steve Ha (NGRI, Oct. 6, 2026) and Muhammad Muzammil (guilty plea July 22, 2026; finding withheld pending sentencing Nov. 20, 2026, counted as a murder conviction, sentence not yet known).
  • Not covered. Fairfax for offenses other than murder and manslaughter; juvenile court; Alexandria circuit before 2020. Arlington includes Falls Church; Prince William includes Manassas and Manassas Park.
